How to Shop for Lingerie Without Losing Your Mind

If you've started shopping for a boudoir session, you've probably discovered something pretty quickly:

There are a lot of options.

  • Bodysuits

  • Teddies

  • Corsets

  • Babydolls

  • Lace

  • Mesh

  • Straps

  • Cutouts

And somehow every website seems convinced that their particular piece will change your life.

It can get overwhelming fast.

In fact, every time I write about lingerie, somebody eventually asks:

"Chris, you're a guy. What do you know about women's lingerie?"

Fair question.

The answer is actually pretty simple.

Over the years, I've photographed many women, and almost every one of them brought multiple outfits to their session. That means I've seen hundreds of pieces of lingerie in front of my camera, some that photographed beautifully and some that didn't.

I've also spent years helping clients choose outfits that work well for their body type, personality, and goals for the session.

And after all that time, I've learned something important:

The most expensive outfit isn't always the best one.

The trendiest outfit isn't always the best one.

The outfit that photographs best is usually the one that makes you feel confident.

Start With Your Personality

One of the biggest mistakes I see is when someone shops for the person they think they're supposed to be instead of the person they actually are.

If you're naturally playful and lighthearted, lean into that.

If you're elegant and sophisticated, embrace it.

If you're bold and adventurous, that's okay too.

Your lingerie should support your personality, not compete with it.

The goal isn't to become someone else for a day.

It's to highlight the version of yourself that's already there.

That's one of the reasons so many women are surprised by the experience itself. Boudoir isn't about becoming someone else. It's about seeing yourself differently. If you're new to boudoir, you may enjoy reading our complete guide to boudoir photography.

Because if you're uncomfortable in what you're wearing, it will show in the photographs.

Fit Matters More Than Anything

If there's one thing I wish every woman knew before shopping for a boudoir session, it's this:

Fit matters more than style.

Fit matters more than color.

Fit matters more than price.

I've had clients bring beautiful pieces that simply didn't fit correctly.

Sometimes they're too tight and create spillage or indentations in the skin.

Sometimes they're too loose and hide the very curves they were meant to highlight.

Just because the tag says it's your size doesn't mean it's the right fit.

If you're investing in quality lingerie, consider getting professionally fitted. Many lingerie boutiques offer fittings and can help you find pieces that complement your body and feel comfortable at the same time.

A properly fitted piece will almost always photograph better than an expensive piece that doesn't fit correctly.

And if you're worried about whether boudoir is really for someone like you, you're not alone. Many women feel that way before booking. You may enjoy reading Think Boudoir Isn't For You? Let's Talk About It.

Don't Get Lost in the Details

Many women spend hours worrying about colors, fabrics, and tiny design details.

The truth is that most of those decisions matter far less than you think.

Yes, certain colors photograph beautifully.

Yes, lace can be gorgeous.

Yes, silk and satin can add a luxurious feel.

But none of those things are nearly as important as how you feel wearing the outfit.

I've seen simple black lingerie outperform expensive designer pieces.

I've seen basic bodysuits create some of the most beautiful images of the entire session.

Don't get so caught up in the details that you forget the bigger picture.

A Few Styles That Rarely Photograph Well

I'm probably going to make some lingerie companies mad with this one.

Not every piece of lingerie photographs well.

One of the biggest offenders is the classic babydoll. You know the one, fitted through the bust and then flowing loosely everywhere else.

They're comfortable.

They're popular.

They look great in person.

The problem is that they often hide the very curves most women are hoping to highlight during their session.

The same can be true of oversized pieces that are too loose or anything that creates a boxy silhouette.

That's not to say you can't wear them. If you love a particular piece and it makes you feel amazing, bring it.

Just know that some styles naturally photograph better than others.

Bodysuits, and pieces that follow the natural lines of your body often create more flattering photographs because they help define shape rather than conceal it.

When in doubt, reach out and ask us for advice. We'd much rather help you choose ahead of time than have you spend money on something that doesn't work the way you hoped.

When in Doubt, Ask for Help

This is exactly why we guide our clients through the process.

You don't have to figure everything out on your own.

In fact, helping clients plan wardrobe is just one part of the process. You can learn more about what to expect from start to finish in our Boudoir Session Process.

If you're unsure about styles, colors, fit, or where to shop, Arleen and I are always happy to help.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick conversation to narrow down your choices and remove a lot of unnecessary stress.

And honestly, that's the goal.

Shopping for your session should be exciting.

Not another item on your to-do list that's keeping you up at night.

Remember What This Is Really About

At the end of the day, lingerie is just a tool.

A beautiful tool, sure, but still a tool.

The real focus of your session isn't the lace, the color, the brand, or the price tag.

It's you.

Your story.

Your confidence.

Your personality.

And the season of life you're in right now.

The right lingerie doesn't make the session special.

You do.
